Grass-fed Tallow Salve with Shea Oil for Hand and Body

from $5.50

This is the simplest skin ointment I make, simply 80% grass-fed beef tallow (or sheep on request), 20% liquid shea oil, and a touch of Vitamin E as an anti-oxidant to extend the shelf life of this natural product.

Grass-fed tallow is loaded with vitamins and nutrients for our skin, as fellow animals our skin is best nourished by animal fats. These fats contain fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K as well as other nutrients that are amazing for our skin.  Shea oil is also a fantastic ingredient - Shea is high in numerous vitamins, especially A, E, and F, has lots of beneficial fatty acids, and unlike other oils (including coconut) is suitable for even oily skin as it won't clog pores (also a thumbs-up for facial use).  All these vitamins and fatty acids make it super-moisturizing and beneficial for our skin, and a great oil to pair with the grass-fed tallow. Vitamin E is included as an anti-oxidant to help keep the tallow fresh - it is not a preservative, so it will not "prevent" the salve from eventually going "off" but it can help slow that process. If you're concerned with the shelf life of the salve, store it in a cool dark place, or even consider keeping it in the fridge - that will extend it's shelf life almost indefinitely!

This is amazing stuff - less waxy-feeling than my beeswax-based Tallow Balm (which I love, don't get me wrong!) - this soaks right in and really moisturizes.  I consider this to be a quick-absorbing salve while the Balm is a longer-lasting "sealant" moisturizer - how you feel about it is really personal preference. Some may feel this soaks in well while others might feel like it doesn't last very long - conversely, the balm may feel greasy to some, while others like that it lasts a long time on their skin. Personally, I love and use both, depending on the circumstances.

Grass-fed Tallow is really great for skin, and is local, sustainable, and much more eco-friendly and ethical than many oils that contribute to deforestation, labor exploitation, etc.   I love that 80% of my ingredients for this product come from within a few miles of us, if not our own farm, rather than the other side of the world.  We render all the tallow ourselves here on the farm, from either our own Scottish Highland steers, or from the grass-fed steers of 2 fellow small, sustainable, diverse farms just down the road - we try to respect the sacrifice our beautiful heritage cattle have made to feed and aid us, and use all that we can from the animals.

I offer this salve in a variety of essential oil and fragrance oil scents - the essential oils are designated with "EO" so choose which is best suited to your needs from the drop-down box when placing your order.  Under FDA regulations, I cannot make health claims about the use of essential oils, but if you have any particular requests of EO blends based on your own research and beliefs, I am happy to make that blend for you - I have a fairly large selection of oils so check with me or just add a note in the "Custom Scent" box at checkout.

This handmade salve is available in 4 sizes of metal tin, and an 8 oz paperboard pot option if you prefer a compostable container.
